Fruit contains vitamins, minerals, fibre and phytochemicals including enzymes and antioxidants, all of which contribute to helping to fight the ageing process and promoting healthy longevity. Apples are a good source of vitamins A and C and minerals such as potassium and calcium.  Apple pectin is a particularly good soluble fibre source, which helps to provide bulk for healthy stools, and help to keep the intestinal tract healthy.  In humans, pectin is sometimes used to lower “bad” cholesterol, to help protect against heart disease and metabolic syndrome. Apples are also a good ‘energy food’ as they contain simple carbohydrates in the form of fruit sugars.
